Learn how to get stunning images of birds in all their glory at a private ranch in the Texas Hill Country.  This workshop is limited to just three participants so each will receive personalized and focused attention.  Additionally, one assistant, another professional photographer, will be on hand to ensure your expectations are exceeded.

Alan Murphy, an internationally published photographer renowned for exceptional photographs of birds on perches which add to the artistry of the image will be drawing from over 15 years of experience and knowledge to offer:

  • How to locate certain species.
  • How to get birds to land where you want them to.
  • How to search for and select the appropriate perch.
  • How to place the perch in relation to the background and sun direction.
  • How to dress up the perches to match the bird’s habitat.
  • How to work a feeder and water drip to their best advantage.
  • All the tips and tricks that bring a stunning image together.

This 400-acre ranch has a diversity of species. Some of the target species include one of North America’s most colorful birds, the Painted Bunting, as well as the Golden-cheeked Warbler, one of the hardest warblers to photograph.  Other species include the Rufus-crowned Sparrow, Black-crested Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Lark Sparrow, Common Ground Dove, White-winged Dove, House Finch and Black-chinned Hummingbird, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Field Sparrow, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Bewick's Wren, Turkey and Black Vultures, Blue Grosbeak, Golden-cheeked Warbler.  Other North American migrants are also possible.

SCHEDULE

We will meet on the ranch Thursday night for a pre-workshop get-together, including a slide show preview of what to expect. This will be followed by four days of intense photography and instruction, with breaks during the mid-day hours to review images or take a dip in a beautiful swimming hole at the ranch.  The final day will close with a BBQ for dinner.

The ranch is twenty minutes from Austin and within 8 miles of the nearest hotels.
Workshop fees include personalized instruction, fees for access and exclusivity at the ranch, lunches, unlimited drinking water, access to the ranch cabin for mid-day breaks, use of the blinds.

Most of our target species are small songbirds, so a minimum of a 400mm lens is required to get the best from this workshop.
