Learn how to get stunning images of birds in all their glory at a private bed and breakfast in Alamo, Texas. (20 mins from McAllen)

This workshop is limited to just four photographers so each will receive personalized and focused attention.

Alan Murphy, an internationally published photographer renowned for exceptional photographs of birds on perches which add to the artistry of the image will be drawing from over 15 years of experience and knowledge to offer:

  • How to locate certain species.
  • How to get birds to land where you want them to.
  • How to search for and select the appropriate perch.
  • How to place the perch in relation to the background and sun direction.
  • How to dress up the perches to match the bird’s habitat.
  • How to work a feeder and water drip to their best advantage.
  • All the tips and tricks that bring a stunning image together.

Alan has been photographing at this location for the past 5 years and has figured out how to get some of the most difficult to photograph species that are specialty birds of the Rio-Grande valley, down onto his set-ups.

The property owners feed the birds daily through the Winter, so the activity at the blind is very busy. This is probably the best location in South Texas to get some of the Rio-Grande valley specialties, such as Altimira Oriole, Great Kiskadee, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Buff-bellied Hummingbird,Green Jay, Clay-colored Robin and many others.

This workshop will be designed to target each species and work the situation to get the ultimate image of that bird. There are many different ways to control the situation for each species and you will take away the knowledge of these techniques to use wherever you shoot around the country.

SCHEDULE

We will meet at the Bed and Breakfast the Evening before your workshop for a pre-workshop get-together. This will be followed by 3 days of intense photography and instruction. Each morning we will walk about 40 yards from our bedrooms to the blind, where we will spend the mornings photographing many great species.

We will take mid day breaks at the B & B where we can review and download images, work on processing and have lunch.

In the afternoon we will be photographing Buff-bellied Hummingbirds, using multi-flash set-ups. I will provide all the flash heads for both Canon and Nikon.

The remaining evenings we will spend visiting some of the nearby State Parks and Wildlife Refuges, to photograph Least Grebe, Black-bellied Whisteling Duck and many more. We will also spend one afternoon on one of the best private ranches of South Texas...

In the Winter, South Texas gets many great bird species that come up from Mexico. If we hear of a good photo opportunity, we may head off to do some in-the-field bird photography.

Workshop fees include personalized instruction, , Park daily access fees, Private ranch fees, Breakfast and lunches, unlimited drinking water, use of the blinds, and bait and feed.
Evening meals are NOT included.
